How BallIQ analyses matches

Our methodology · updated for the 2025-26 season

What BallIQ is

BallIQ reads every upcoming match across the top European leagues — Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, Ligue 1, Eredivisie, Primeira Liga — plus the UEFA Champions League and World Cup periods, turning the numbers into a short, specific verdict. No tipping, no odds, no hype — just a transparent read of what the form and the table are telling us.

Our goal is a single honest question: which side does the data prefer, and how confident should you be about that read?

The four factors

Every match read combines four independent signals. Each one is normalised against its own scale, then weighted to produce a home / draw / away split and a confidence score.

Venue-split form25%
Home form and away form are not interchangeable. We track each team's last five games at the venue they are playing next and build a points-based score — wins count 3, draws count 1, losses zero.
Goal expectancy20%
Home attack and away defence (plus the mirror for the visiting side) over the last 10 venue-matched games. Teams that average 2.4 goals at home facing a side leaking 2.0 on the road show up clearly.
League position gap15%
Current points and table position from the live standings. A top-four side hosting a mid-table club gets a measurable lift — the model reads the season context, not just recent form.
Head to head8%
The most recent meetings between the two sides. A small nudge, not a hammer — recent rivalries count but we do not let a three-year-old result drive a modern read.

An 8% home advantage baseline is applied on top of these factors, reflecting the statistical edge that hosts enjoy across the big five leagues over the last three seasons.

Confidence levels

Not every read deserves the same weight. We publish a confidence badge alongside every match:

● HIGH
Deep sample, wide gap
● MED
Reasonable signal
● LOW
Flip of the coin

HIGH means both sides have at least four venue games in the sample, and the leading outcome is 22+ points ahead of the next. LOW means the sample is thin, the teams are too close, or both. Treat a LOW read as "the model has nothing useful to say here".

What we do not do

Data sources

All match, fixture and standings data comes from football-data.org. Form, venue splits, goal averages and head to head are computed on our servers from the last 60 days of completed matches. Match reads are refreshed every 12 minutes; a deep recalculation runs nightly.

Limits and honesty

No model replaces watching football. Injuries, line-ups, weather, manager changes and pure randomness can and do flip matches. A HIGH confidence read means "the numbers align strongly" — it does not mean "this outcome is guaranteed". When results disagree with the read, the numbers update and the next read reflects what just happened.
